Energy efficiency in the home - Economics

Almost all savings are cost effective when fuel costs are rising so quickly. The cheapest savings are those obtained by using appliances more efficiently. When buying a new appliance, it is worth investing in the most efficient model that can be afforded - the savings over the old model could be as much as 50%.

For home insulation, some methods are inexpensive like increasing insulation levels in the loft. Cavity wall insulation is more expensive whilst double glazing is sufficiently expensive that it is worth adding to the mortgage if possible. Alternatively it is possible to change one window at a time starting with the most frequently used room such as the living room.

Grants

All UK utilities operate an energy efficiency grant programme which usually offers substantial grants on home insulation and low energy light bulbs. Grants may also be on offer for energy efficient appliances (grade A or above). In addition, utilities also work with leading retailers to make available energy efficient products including home insulation.
